Homecoming Mums A History in the Making!

I’ve just successfully published my first article regarding homecoming mums, and have gained Expert Author status on ezine.com! I also plan to add an article on how to pin on a Homecoming Mum, how to order a homecoming garter for a guy, and more!

Here are some excerpts. To read the whole article, please follow the link below!

What is a homecoming mum? You may be thinking that the Homecoming Queen simply goes by another name in the South, or that her mother also plays a role in the festivities. Homecoming Queen and Homecoming Mum…would make sense. However, a mum refers to a unique flower collage that is deeply rooted in Texas football history.

…Students typically begin wearing homecoming mums the Friday before their high school football game. All schools are different, but most students wear them only on the day before the game. Students also typically wear homecoming mums during the football game AND after to their homecoming formal dance. If you are new to Texas, check with a friend on the common practices in your community…

Essentially, this is a keepsake that provides a snap shot of exactly where these two people are at during that one week of their high school life. If a couple is attending as friends, the mum could include general information and be of medium size. Hearts and other romantic details should be kept off so neither party gets the wrong impression from the event. On the other hand, it is fair game to go all out with the above details and any additional important details for a serious high school couple. Keep in mind, most girls save them afterwards, and pack them away as a memory along with high school year books. She will notice if her mum was “mass produced” at a local grocery store or flower shop just as she will appreciate any personalized details.

Middle School Homecoming Mum

cassies mum 199x300 Middle School Homecoming Mum

Mum shown on 3rd grader

Middle school homecoming mums have become popular recently, as the pre-teen crowd continues in their attempt to keep in stride older high school siblings, neighbors, and friends. After all, many middle school students in a school district will attend their local homecoming football game! In Texas, football games are woven into the local culture, so whether we’re talking about a small town, or a large city, a large portion of the community will turn up to support the home team!

While high school homecoming mums were once simply a flower, they have grown into an eccentric display which showcases the individual personality of each high school student. In doing so, the concept has created an image of the homecoming mum as being desirable, simply because the mum is typically purchased by a boy and given to a girl. When a mum is given, the implication is that a romantic connection exists. So, in our culture today, children have begun to “date” younger and younger, and Middle School “couples” can reasonably be expected to attend a homecoming game together. It is not likely for a middle school to hold a homecoming dance, as this is typically reserved for high school students, however, in an attempt to “hang” with an older crowd, middle school students have begun wearing and giving homecoming mums like their older peers.

Of course, this also means that parents are buying mums for their middle school students. Any middle school student who is not being supplied with a mum by their date would naturally want to receive one to wear at a game. The overall culture has convinced the middle school student (in the same way as high school students) that they must wear a homecoming mum to a game.

Boutique Hair Bow Instructions Houston

Many people are surprised to know that 5th Avenue Bowtique offers “hands on” boutique hair bow instructions. After all, there is a surge of internet based instructions on how to make boutique style hair bows. PROBLEM is that many people do prefer to learn in person, and I’ve always been skeptical of the success of the internet based instructions based on THOSE that I have seen myself.

The Woodlands, Tx. area Mom’s Of Multiples will be attending the next PRIVATE group class to receive instructions in person on how to make Boutique style hair bows. There is also an October hair bow class, which will teach the same type of instructions and is open to the public of Houston, Tx (or wherever you may be coming from). Some people are surprised that, in the more than 4 years that the class has been offered, we have seen students travel from all over Texas to attend. Our students have come from Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, Orange, and host of other places…so many that we have crowned ourselves the most successful “hands on” Boutique Hair bow Instructors in the country. We have taught well over 500 students ranging in age from 13 to 81 (including some Dads! Yes, their wives ALL dragged them along) how to make bows using our program, which includes a basic one layer boutique hair bow class. A complementary “custom” bow class teaches boutique style layering techniques and additional instructions for popular ideas and techniques, many of which cost high $$$ in boutiques across the country.

Among these students, there was no surprise that some of them were able to take our instructions to create their own successful accounts with their own boutiques in Houston and other areas! One of our students had hair bows in a popular San Antonio resale shop and a San Antonio news station did a feature story on both the shop AND her bows! We love to see these success stories!

I was not, in any way, surprised when I received a phone call from a flight attendant from Continental. (Continental has a hub in the Houston continental airport, after all) She said, “Where are you located? I am willing to travel ANYWHERE to get hands on instructions to make hair bows! I am sick of paying boutiques prices! I can’t believe you are actually in Houston…I live here!” We have actually been contacted from women in other states who have considered making a trip out of our class. Either visiting relatives in tandem with our class, or simply coming down in order to learn!

Now, back to the internet based boutique hair bow instructions- after teaching hundreds of women in person, we’ve really got these instructions down! We see different groups of people, but the same problems and challenges with each group, so learning how to “fix” them permanently so these women can go home and truly make their own bows is what we pride ourselves in. And so, after more than 4 years, we’ll be coming out with INTERNET BASED instructions that will help everyone else that can’t come in person! All of the same techniques, ideas, and concepts will apply. The instructions aren’t simply made by someone who knows how to make pretty boutique bows, or someone who did a great job writing instructions. They are instructions written by someone who has taught many, many people to make their own boutique bows!

Homecoming Mum Ring Spirit Ring

0291 300x225 Homecoming Mum Ring Spirit RingI just completed this homecoming mum Ring design, and, although I am a full grown adult, I am tempted to wear this Homecoming ring around this afternoon.  My initial thought was, “Why should the Homecoming Queen have all of the fun?”  And, so long as everyone is already dressing up, what better than to add matching accessories!

Now, everyone knows that “re-wearing” a homecoming mum is against the rules…this is a faux paus in the same category as wearing your old wedding dress to your second wedding.  Don’t get caught doing it.  However, I hardly think that re-wearing an accessory such as a mum ring, earrings, bracelet or other spirit items would constitute a foul.  In fact, since all 5th Avenue Bowtique items are “lifetime quality” (all of our materials are chosen so that your mum will last many years- specifically, or grosgrain ribbon, which won’t tear, bend or break), this little mum ring will be great for many years of wear, and a keepsake of your homecoming games!

The homecoming mum ring is shown with several coordinating layers of ribbon, several sequin streamers, and curled grosgrain ribbon streamers.  The center is one of our famous diamond beads paired with a high quality metal football charm!

Homecoming mums How to attach a homecoming mum

homecoming mum medium custom 225x300 Homecoming mums How to attach a homecoming mum

How do you wear this sucker, which is over 10 pounds? Our guide will help..

homecoming mums are something that many Texas high school girls look forward to each year.  The designing of the homecoming mum is part of the fun, and the act of receiving the mum from someone special (even if mom) is equally important.  I have previously explained that it is a social faux paus to make it through homecoming week at a Texas high shcool without a homecoming mum.  Seems crazy?  It’s just Texas.

So, if you’ve found the mum of your dreams, you should be in ethereal bliss.  However, there is one common problem that could bring your homecoming mum fashion statement to a screeching halt.

If this is your first homecoming, or your mum is enormously heavy (again, think 10+ pounds), you’ve got to be wondering, “How do I attach my homecoming mum?”  Students have pushed themselves into the tradition of wearing the homecoming mum all the way through school on Friday before the homecoming game, then again during the Homecoming football game, and ALSO at the homecoming dance!

Some girls have been known to take off the mums during school simply because they are so darn heavy…carrying an extra load of 10 pounds can be exhausting.  Now, if this were one of my children, I might elect (in a brief lapse of judgement) to remind my daughter of the dangers of pregnancy…this may be a unique opportunity to explain how uncomfortable dragging this much weight can be.  That is a random comment, but the point is that the competitors in this event have got to pace themselves for the distance of the race.  Taking the homecoming mums on and off as needed may be necessary.

So, how are you going to get the homecoming mum to cooperate?  This is a unique “accessory”, being so heavy, lengthy, and (especially) having a hard cardboard backing that is not ideal for securing to a body in any way.  What is the best way to attach the homecoming mum?

5th Avenue Bowtique homecoming mums come with several alligator clips secured to the back, which can hold to the inside edge of a shirt (or spagetti strap during the dance- whatever you decide).  But, this isn’t going to keep the homecoming mum on…and, if you have no alligator clips, you’re going to need a lot more!  We recommend that customers secure the remainder of the homecoming mum with safety pins by sticking several through the back of of the homecoming mum (so they are hidden), and carefully through the shirt, dress, or other garment being worn.

We sometimes include “sashes” for our homecoming mums, which wrap all the way around the back and completely avoid any pinning.  This makes taking the homecoming mum off EASY and painless, and is a “clothes saver”- all of those pin holes can really rip up some fabrics!

Here is another suggestion- because of this difficult process, if you’re going “sashless”, consider wearing clothing you know will not be damaged by your homecoming mum.  Wide strapped tank tops work well as well as cotton t-shirts.

When you purchase your homecoming gown, consider how you will be wearing your homecoming mum…spagetti strap gowns and sleeveless gowns are the enemy of homecoming mums.  You will be struggling to keep your homecoming mum attached (and not pulling down your dress in some cases) the entire night!

Custom fairy costume abandoned for statue of liberty…

Sigh…just got finished writing about the fabulous new fairy costumes that will be designed this year for our new customers.  Recalling story about meeting the mother who planned the birthday party for the recipient of the first custom fairy princess costume…however,

This year, apparently, our little pumpkin will not be dressing in her traditional custom fairy costume garb.  Granted, last year was a bit of a stretch- the Snow white “tulle” fairy outfit aka princess custom costume was gorgeous, but not exactly a fairy.  The skirt followed the same design pattern along with a princess sash, but was still equally as versatile and functional as our other “costumes”.  The top of the princess set was a full on satin Snow White corset style top with puffy sleeves and tall/stiff white neckline.

So, imagine my surprise when I learned that our little lady has decided she would like to be the statue of liberty.  Apparently, this may be the first custom costume that I design this year after all…

Sorry, I’m not going with tulle this time.  This will be my first official “non fairy” costume, and I’m sure it will be fabulous.

Patriotism is so honorable, especially in a 5 year old.

Custom Fairy princess costume for Halloween

Fall is always a bit of a smush around here between mums, bow orders for school pictures, special occasions, and halloween…and then, the custom fairy costumes, which are extremely popular for halloween.

It’s just about here, and I know that there are many little princesses around who are in need of the perfect costume.  Now, like all of our designs, our custom fairy princess costume is made to be as versatile as possible.  We want you to be able to use our product in as MANY different ways as possible so you can enjoy it for as long as possible!  So, why customize?  Yes, it requires a bit more, but we’re able to create EXACTLY what people want…we’re pretty good at that.

So, what exactly goes into one of our Custom Fairy Princess costumes?  First, the skirt.  The skirt is custom designed based on your size specifications.  We love to use ribbon “tie backs” (as opposed to traditional tutu’s, which are sewn together with elastic, and can constrict the waste…your little princess will grow out of this non-adjustable version much sooner!).  Our tie back skirts allow you to get a lot of wear out of your skirt.  We can add 1-2 extra inches (scaled to the size you order), so she will continue to grow “into” her costume before she grows out of it.  Sounds a little smart, huh?

Better yet, since it is adjustable, your princess will be able to share her custom fairy costume with other little princesses during “dress up” play dates, or with a sibling.  Just tie the waste accordingly.

Now, onto the specifics of the costume…the Custom Fairy princess costume for halloween includes 4 pieces.  EVERYTHING is customized unless one of our signature pre-designed costumes is requested

So, your fairy costume will be designed after we take your cues for colors of tulle for the skirt, colors of flowers in headpieces, wings (wing style and size, color of mairibou trim, etc.), and wand…of course we would love to create your custom wand to match perfectly to your fairy costume.  However, we have been known to break the rules and give customers whatever they want.  Designing for us is part of the fun!

On the website, we showcase a photo next to our Custom Fairy Princess costume of a little girl.  The photo was taken by her mother, who purchased the costume for her daughter to wear for her first birthday.  The party was a “fairy” party, so it was fitting.  However, afterward, the costume was perfect for play and the upcoming halloween (or two, or three or four).

Homecoming Mums – a development of Texas Football

mum website photos 045 225x300 Homecoming Mums a development of Texas Football

monogrammed ribbon- part of our Custom Mum package

I’m still on the homecoming mums topic.  After all, the Texas football season has begun.  Texans everywhere are dragging the festivities out as long as humanly possible.

In towns like Midland-Odessa, Texas football will truly run the local culture.  Yes, the show Friday Night Lights is pretty darn accurate.  When it comes to football, Texans can be brutal and will stop at nothing for their football fix.

I met a stay at home mom yesterday who had 3 children.  Her son, 10, is a football player.  Daughter, slightly younger, is doing Texas competitive cheer.  So, here is how she described her children’s “sports activities”:

“…the football coaches run them like crazy.  It is so hot that most of the boys are puking and crying.  A lot of the mom’s who stay to watch will comment with phrases like, ‘I love Texas football’ when this happens….”‘

Really?

Now, for the daughter.  Little squirt is a competitive cheerleader at about 7 years old.  At her gym, the cheer mothers have been told they can not attend practice.  Essentially, they have been kicked out of the gym while their young daughters practice because they are so aggressive and attempt to communicate with their daughters (this interferes with the coaching).

So, this mom says to me, “I haven’t been staying for football practice.  Most of the mom’s do, but I just don’t see the point…when they have a problem with it, I remind them that the cheer teams don’t even allow parents to watch”

So, this is how the Texas football tradition continues from generation to generation.  And, it is no wonder that our state is among the only to pass down the homecoming tradition.  After all, there are enough people that dislike the homecoming mum concept.  Last year, I actually had a customer tell me her daughter changed her mind and no longer wanted a homecoming mum.  However, homecoming mums and the related events are an activity participated in by the collective.  I don’t mean just a high school, or a town.  I am talking about the entire state.

Homecoming games are an opportunity for the 10 year old boys playing little league football to take a break from practice (and the heat stroke), and attend a “real” game.  Hopefully this will give them an idea of what they could be…in a few years.  Hopefully, they’ll be lucky enough to play in a High School Football game.  This is irrelevant to the homecoming mum tradition, but they are both equally interesting.  In the same way that the mum idea keeps being passed down (regardless of whether everyone really loves them), the idea of starting babies off with football and cheer is contagious.

Gymnastics Hair bow gift or party favor

product photos july 29 009 300x225 Gymnastics Hair bow gift or party favorThis week welcomed the beginning of the USAG compulsory womens gymnastics season in the United States.  Young girls, beginning at age 4, are gearing up across the country to compete in USAG competitive gymanstics.  This is levels 2-6.  You may be wondering about those four year olds…really?  Yes, really.  And, they are tough.  If you’re attending a competition, be sure to bring flowers as a gift for your little contender.  She will love them!  Our gymnastics hair bow is also the perfect gift and a great surprise for a job well done!

In honor of the 2010 season, I’ve designed this new gymastics girl hair bow and clippie set.  We were headed to a birthday party for one ofour amazing 4 year old gymnast friends, and I realized that a gymnastics hair bow would be the perfect gift for her to open at the birthday party!  We know a lot of four year old gymnasts, and, I’ve found that, in shopping for various gifts whether online or in retail stores, there is a great inequality between “dance” and “gymnastics” merchandise.  Why does everyone seem to favor dance?

The amount of dance and ballet memorabilia (including hair bows), gifts and party supplies is unreal.  Gymboree even has an ‘I love dance’ themed line in stores this fall.  So imagine my lack of surprise when I began planning a gymnastics themed party.  I am yet to find gymnastics themed party favors that are reasonably cute.  Granted, many of them carry a USA/olympics theme, and many others are somewhat tacky.  Until recently, I thought that little girls doing dance and gymnastics seemed similar enough, however, it appears that dance is more popular.

Several recent studies have suggested that gymnastics is the “toughest” sport around, with football as the distinguished runner up.  Kevin Mazeika, theUSA Men’s Olympic Gymnastics Coach and owner of Gym Masters of Houston, Tx., went so far as to include the comparison in recent promotional material.  Keep working four year olds…you have a great career ahead!  If gymnastics doesn’t workout, there are infinite other opportunities!

Why is it that the fashion industry has turned it’s back on gymnasts?  Does anyone seem to care about the little gymnasts and their need to glam it up outside of practice? Forget the concept of gift giving, I’m talking about basic purchases. USAG no longer allows young girls to wear make up during competition…not even finger nail or toe nail polish.  So, it seems reasonable for them to have some ‘special’ little things outside of the gym… after all, what girl doesn’t love her hair bows, accessories, and clothes?

Apparently, party wholesalers think that Gymnastics party themes are on the decline.   Not sure where this came from, because gymnastics themed parties are alive and well.  Many gyms across the United States offer gymnastics themed birthday parties.  Of course, many moms will want the coordinating plates, napkins, cake toppers, and party favors– plain jane just won’t do for most of us.

So, after my internet search, I determined that the world was in need of more gymnastics products, and I was the girl for the job.  I became determined to create a gymnastics hair bow gift set, and I sure am happy with the results.  Of course, I planned to add the hair bow to my website, which would also double as a fabulous party favor!

If you haven’t already discovered this martha stewart-ish gift giving tip, I am going to let you in on a little secret…hair bows are the PERFECT present topper.  Throw out your traditional curled gift ribbon or gift bows, and add a simple hair bow to the top of the present.  The same can be done for party favors.  This simple extra detail draws attention to your gift, and, with that tiny extra detail (think $2 for a small basic bow- visit our website: www.5thavenuebowtique.com), and becomes a second present in itself!

The clippie on this hair bow is actually interchangeable.  Both pieces can be worn alone, or together.  It’s the perfect gift because it is so versatile…the clippie would, alone, be an ideal party favor!

So, to maximize the ‘martha stewart’ in me, I placed the gymnastics clippie on top of the present on a large bow card turn backwards.  This replaced the traditional “birthday gift card” and gift giving bow.  If you want to replicate this idea with your own hair bow, but don’t have a 3×5″ card from the supplier, a nice sized piece of cardstock will suffice.  Punch holes for the clip to be inserted, and attach bow to card.  Then, tape card down to birthday present.  Be sure to write a nice message for your birthday girl to read AFTER the party!  She’ll be touched that you thought of her with this extra surprise.

It was only after I finished the bow that I realized these gymnastics hair bows would make an equally fabulous birthday party favor.  I have had many customers purchase themed hair bows or clippies for their female guests to coordinate with birthday parties.  With the popularity of gymnastics themed birthday parties surging across the country as competitive gyms open their doors after hours and on weekends for party guests, I realized I was on to something!

There are dozens of combinations that can be customized, and both you and your little girl will marvel at our ability to create her look alike out of a 3/8″ grosgrain ribbon hair bow!  When ordering this hair bow, customers must designated gymnast hair color, leotard color, hair bow color, and clip styles for BOTH hair bow and clippie.  The interchangeable hair bow set allows both pieces to be worn seperately (as bow or clippie), or together- as the layered gymnastics hair bow set.  Customers can purchase additional basic hair bows to mix and match, as well as other clips!

If your birthday girl is having a gymnastics themed party, this is the icing on the cake!

So, how would one of these tough (but adorably sweet) 4 year old gymnasts react to this type of gift?  Stay tuned…
